Ukraine’s IT industry by the numbers
Posted on October 28th, 2014 Diana

How many IT specialists does Ukraine have and how much do they make? Which developers are in most demand? The founder of a Ukrainian job search site, Maxim Ischenko reported his findings on the state of the IT industry and what to expect in the next year at this year’s IDCEE conference, an annual conference on Internet technologies and innovations in Central and Eastern Europe.

Where do Ukrainian developers work?

According to Ischenko’s findings, there are now 75,000 developers in Ukraine. From them, 15,000 work in large companies. 45% of developers live in Kiev, 18% live in Kharkov and 9.3% live in Lviv. The next largest IT-oriented cities are Dnepropetrovsk and Odessa.

Ukraine software developers and companies that employ them The majority of Ukrainian IT specialists work in the outsourcing industry. The second most common employer is product companies. Start-ups employ about 4.5% of the country’s developers. The graph on the right shows the break-down of employers by type, where ODC stands for Offshore Dedicated Center, where companies set-up their own dedicated development office and hire local talent for cost efficiency.

Who is the average developer?

The average age of Ukrainian developers is 27 years old. This is a 2 year increase from 2011. The average length of time working in the IT industry is 1-3 years. The majority of the specialists have a higher education degree and understand English.

The IT job market in Ukraine

Demand for Ukrainian IT developers based on skills The demand is highest for specialists working with enterprise, web and mobile development. Employers have a preference for experienced developers. The graph on the left shows the number of IT specialists hired based on their expertise. Despite the crisis, the number of job vacancies remained the same. Yet, the number of applicants has increased with an average of two specialists per job posting.

The average salary has actually decreased from $2600 to $2100. According to Ischenko, this isn’t an indicator that experienced developers are getting paid less. Rather, this indicates that there are more people willing to take up jobs with lower pay, since the average salary of highly specialized developers has remained the same.

Furthermore, the number of people that want to work in the IT industry has noticeably increased. For example, one of IT learning centers in Ukraine received 1400 applications for 80 spots, while an open position for a junior developer currently has an average of 20 applicants.

Predictions for Ukraine’s IT market in 2015

The development of IT in the next year depends on two factors – internal and external. The demand for Ukrainian IT specialists will depend on US and European market growth. If the development continues, the industry will continue to grow, with more companies opening and more job vacancies. Otherwise, the number and growth will likely decrease.

The other factor is the conflict in the East of the country. If the situation stabilizes, companies will be able to secure more contracts.

Belarus ahead of India and USA in per capita exports of computer services
Posted on September 2nd, 2014 Diana

Volume of Belarus per capita exports of computer services exceeded those of USA and India. Based on last year’s export data, Belarus computer services exports reached $60 USD per capita, meanwhile the same export indicators in USA and India were $36 USD and $41 USD respectively.

In 2013 the total amount of computer services exports in Belarus exceeded $480 million USD. “Belarus has all the right pre-requisites for the development of a succesful IT industry,” said Dmitry Shedko, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Communications and Information. “Most notably, these conditions include an outstanding education system that continually provides a talent pool of well-qualified IT specialists. The country also has an organized, high quality telecommunications infrastructure. Finally, it has a favorable legal framework that provides a number of tax benefits.”

Belarus is the only country among members of its customs union (which includes Russia and Kazakhstan) with a positive balance in computer services. The number has grown rapidly over the past 5 years.

“It’s important to understand that behind these numbers is the hard work of thousands of people; it’s not just one isolated project. The numbers represent a systematic process and reflect Belarusian professionalism that is valued all over the world. It’s the incremental movement of Belarus towards world-class recognition. In the last few years our country has ‘increased its weight’ not only based on the volume of computer services exports, but also in other parts of the IT industry. For these reasons it’s reasonable to expect that Belarus will be among the top 30 countries in 2015 with the highest level of IT technology development,” Shedko notes.

The Belarus High Technologies Park (HTP) is the biggest exporter of computer services in Belarus. HTP Belarus is a government-supported organization that promotes the well-being of the IT industry in Belarus and consists of companies and organizations working in the IT industry. InteticsBel became a resident of HTP Belarus in 2010. In 2013 the exports from HTP was $446.7 million USD, accounting for more than 80% of country’s overall computer services exports. In the first 6 months of 2014, HTP members exported $246.1 million USD.

Belarus home of the best programmer in the world
Posted on August 5th, 2014 Diana

Belarus is home country to the winner of one of the biggest, international programming competitions. The Belarusian programmer won among 3890 contenders from 72 countries in the Yandex.Algorithm challenge, hosted by Codeforces. Winners are chosen based on personal score and compete for their countries and institutions, with only 25 of the best programmers reaching the final stage of the competition. This is the first time Belarus came out on top against traditional programming giants such as Russia and China.

During the 2014 Yandex.Algorithm challenge Belarus ranked as the number one country ahead of Russia, China, Japan and Poland. The reason behind the country’s success is the winner of the challenge: the current record-holder is a Belarusian programmer, Gennady Korotkevich, nicknamed “tourist,” who studies at the St. Petersburg University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics. He ranked first among almost 4,000 rivals from around the world. Thanks to Korotkevich and other Belarusian entrants, Belarus ranked as the number one programming country. Altogether the challenge had 161 Belarusian entries, with 4 Belarusians ranking in the Top 50. In comparison, only one programmer from the United States and none from India ranked in the Top 50.

The competition was hosted by Codeforces, an organization that is becoming one of the leading organizations for competitive programming. It is becoming as prominent in the world of competitive programming as TopCoder.com, a US-based organization that organizes the global TopCoder Challenge. Codeforces increasing popularity is evident by the number of entrants – it lists many more participants than the TopCoder challenge (although TopCoder bases ranks only on active accounts from the last 180 days).

The Yandex.Algorithm challenge is an open competition where some challenges are written by employees from Yandex, the biggest search engine in Russia. The competition features two qualification rounds, two online rounds, and a final onsite round. Programmers are ranked based on personal achievements, but can also participate on behalf of their respective countries, universities and organizations. Out of all Belarusian universities, Belarusian State University ranks highest (28th), competing with other universities and companies like Yandex (4th), Google (6th) and Facebook (11th).

Intetics President speaks about geopolitical crises impacts on IT outsourcing, discusses Ukraine
Posted on July 25th, 2014 Diana

On Thursday, July 17, 2014, Intetics President and Founder Boris Kontsevoi spoke about impacts of geopolitical crises on global business at DePaul University during the IAOP Chicago Chapter meeting. The presentation compared the current situation in Ukraine to other geopolitical events worldwide and discussed its potential impacts, risks and opportunities.

In the face of the current conflict in Eastern Ukraine, global business leaders are returning to discussions about managing global operations during geopolitical crises. Geopolitical risks arise often and global companies need to develop solid risk management plans to mitigate potential loss. Boris’s presentation raised several comparisons with previous geopolitical crises, discussed the geopolitics of the Internet, as well as impacts of geopolitical conflicts on several economies, including Ukraine. After a brief overview of the recent events in Ukraine, he explained the potential risks companies may be facing, but also discussed some future opportunities.

The presentation suggested a few strategies towards managing geopolitical crises, as well as reviewed business objectives when outsourcing. When companies outsource they do not do business with the country, rather, they do business with another company – their chosen provider. This fact was something that seemed particularly relevant as Boris analyzed impact of Indian geopolitical problems on their IT outsourcing industry, as well as the rising stock prices of leading outsourcing providers in Ukraine.

The IAOP Chicago Chapter meeting was focused on discussing geopolitical instability and outsourcing management. The meeting also featured a panel discussion about Ukraine and introduced best practices for writing outsourcing agreements.

Prior to the crisis, the IT industry sector in Ukraine was growing at a 25% rate. Ukraine has over 30,000 ICT graduates annually and is the 4th country with the largest number of certified IT professionals. The new Ukrainian government has expressed its commitment to improving the IT industry in the future. The global community has also taken steps towards protecting the Ukraine IT sector, with initiatives such as Tech4Ukraine. In his presentation, Boris seemed confident that the industry will recover if the conflict is resolved soon.

New taxi tip prediction map can change the way we take cabs
Posted on July 22nd, 2014 Diana

Geographic data visualization of passenger tipping behavior could be the next big thing for taxi cab servicesWouldn’t taxi drivers love to know the tip to expect before a taxi passenger gets in?

At the ESRI User Conference last week, members of the InteticsGIS team and SUNY Stony Brook University unveiled a map capable of doing exactly that: predict the amount of tips passengers will leave for taxi drivers. Based on 170 million taxi tip records collected in New York City in 2013, the goal of the researchers was to use this data to predict taxi tipping behavior and use GIS tools to visualize the results. The map received enormous positive feedback throughout the conference. And no wonder. It could change the way we take cabs, but it can also change how we work towards data visualization.

ESRI User Conference is the largest conference for GIS users in the world. This year, InteticsGeo in collaboration with Stony Brook University presented the results of their work that visually shows the distribution and amount of taxi tips in New York City based on ZIP-code. The resulting product includes features such as a geographic visualization of the number of generous tippers by ZIP-code, a map that correlates generous tipping and mean family income, as well as a map exploring the popularity of a particular location by looking at number of trips vs. tip generosity. The map can be used to predict the tips expected based on location and visually organizes the results.

Intetics taxi tip map receives great feedback at ESRI Conference 2014Among a lot of positive feedback, the map received a mention from ESRI CEO Jack Dangermond. The map was displayed in the Gallery of the ESRI conference, where many people complimented the map and investigated it with interest. Many wondered if this is something already in use by taxi companies, while others commended the clarity and simplicity of the layout. Others were interested in the technical aspect of the map, such as how the 3D columns were created and which regression tools were used and how they were incorporated with ESRI’s ArcGIS.

This map is a step in the right direction for collaboration between data scientists and GIS analysts. While both use different technologies, there are many opportunities for effective cooperation. This map combined both data and visual elements with success, and it is living proof that integrating these technologies can lead to relevant and valuable products in the future.
